Our main focus is on saltwater fly fishing in the southern and central
California area but all are welcome. There are no commercials ads, pop-ups or
"fund raisers" so kick-back and enjoy!
Here's my story...
I'm am not a professional fisherman... but like a lot of folks who grew up fishing, I eventually learned
to fly fish. And, like a lot of folks who fly fish, I
quickly became obsessed with the thing. However, living near Los Angeles can pose
some serious
limitations for those who would pursue such
obsessions (or so I thought). After reading an article in California
Fly Fisher written by Mike Messina entitled “Surf City”
(August 1998), I embarked on another adventure with an old love
of mine, the Pacific Ocean. Having surfed for many years I was
already familiar with much of the Southern California coastline
and looked forward to visiting some of my old haunts.
My first outing was a disaster, as were the next several trips. Back to Mike's article again and a trip to the local fly shop. More disappointment. I bought some new gear and started again from the top. More frustration.
I finally met a guy at the Santa Ana river jetties who effortlessly caught (20+) croaker as I watched him for about an hour or so. At one point he even motioned me to join him. I was too embarrassed, but I followed the poor guy back to his car and must have asked him 100 questions. He graciously listened to my tale of woe and took time to share some of his insights. On my next trip I caught (3) halibut and (2) croaker and was hooked more deeply than any of them.
Since then I have met a few others who brave wind and wave for the rich rewards that await those willing to explore this wide open frontier. Perhaps you are one of them…
My wife, who was taking a web design class on Saturday mornings, encouraged me to create this site and my son, Ian basically built it while I pointed and grunted. Hope you enjoy it! Doug & Ian
