Wading
Basket Mods for the Pacific Surf Zone

I
started with a stock
Orvis wading basket. It was a good platform for the modifications needed to
make a usable basket for the So Cal Surf Zone. Here is a list of the mods that
were performed, along with some images of the basket:
- Lip-Gripper
& Mount - I mounted a Berkeley Lip-Gripper using a rubber C-shaped boat
rod holder/clip. I fastened the clip to the front of the basket using a
WellNut blind fastener. This system allows for easy access, quick
deployment, & secure stowage of the gripper.
- Drain
Holes - I have added more holes than pictured twice now! Drill holes until
the basket drains well enough for the surf conditions that you feel safe
fishing in. Drill these holes up on the sides as well as the bottom. I used
.500” and 3/8” holes staggered about. Butterfly-style wood drill bits
cut clean holes.

Retractor
-The side mounted retractor allows full range motion when deploying the
Lip-Gripper (Note:Right Handed Mount). I utilized a SS retractor with plastic
sheathed, SS cable on this particular basket. A Heavy Duty Hammerhead retractor
will work fine too. I mounted this retractor with SS screws from the inside and
put RTV over the screw heads and washers to prevent stripped line from snagging
there.
- Heavy
Duty Belt with Quick Release Buckle -The belt that comes with the Orvis
Basket is too flimsy & floppy. I upgraded to an Uncle Mikes Gun Belt.
It has a heavy-duty plastic buckle and the web is Ballistic Nylon.
Just right!
- Pool
Noodle Lip - This cushions the lip and cradles the rod nicely without
damage. The noodle is trimmed to length, slit open along the centerline
and press-fit along the basket’s rim. It is removable too. The noodle
also adds buoyancy and Hi-Visibility to the basket; which may be helpful
in the event that you are washed out in a rip, or have to cut the basket
loose in a spill. Lastly, when I change-out flies, I usually store them
inside the basket; hooked up under the bottom of the noodle. This allows
you to avoid contamination of your fli-box. When you are done fishing,
just rinse and dry those flies along with your other gear. Note: Be sure
to clean and lube the retractor reel. RL
